Netizens: Put Power Into A Cage? Why Not Free Civilians First?
On January 22, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)
media reported Xi Jinping spoke again about corruption.
This time, it was at a CCP disciplinary watchdog meeting.
Xi advocated: “To enhance restraint and
supervision on the use of power, which
should be restricted by the cage of regulations.”
Xi’s remarks soon triggered heated discussions
online, where the word ‘cage’ was mostly mentioned.
A search on Sina microblog for the term ‘cage’
returns up to 6 million results with related content.
Some netizens said that behind his words are revealed
that the new leadership has no intention of reforming.
Putting power into a cage is empty talk, giving a false hope.
Netizens commented, “If anyone believed what Xi
said about the cage, then surely they would believe
Jiang Zemin’s Eight-point Proposal, Wen Jiabao’s tears,
Deng Xiaoping’s stone and Mao Zedong’s personnel.”
Beijing lawyer Yu Guofu told Deutsche Welle that the
first step should be to “free civilians from the cage.”
To restrict power in a cage of regulations is only one aspect.
Without the release of civilians first, who
is able to restrict the power into a cage?
It will need a higher power, and if so, it may lose the
power of restriction, causing even more abuse of power.
UK Media: Return of War Rhetoric From China
On January 23, the UK’s Financial Times commented,
that Beijing is now being much more open with war rhetoric.
Phrases about fighting wars have replaced
talk about peace in speeches in the past.
The article said, “such rhetoric is partly
driven by domestic considerations.
Xi Jinping heads up a party that is deeply split
over how to address the nation’s growing problems.
National pride and an assertive stance could
help provide the vital glue to hold things together.”
The article said that the CCP has begun to take the warlike
threat strategy when dealing with the Diaoyu Islands dispute.
The article said that such a strategy of deterrence is likely
to succeed with many countries in China’s backyard.
However, the CCP will lose internationally, as it will
no longer be able to deny that China is a global threat.
1000 Beijing Foxconn Workers On Strike
On January 21 and 22, over 1000 workers
went on strike at Beijing Foxconn factory.
They were protesting against that fact that there were

Foxconn workers didn’t have a pay rise in 2012, and
the end-of-year year bonuses haven’t been confirm.
They appealed many times, but the answers
given by the management were not clear.
Striking workers negotiated with the management
during the afternoon of January 21, as they were promised a reply the following day.
On the morning of the next day, over 1000 workers
were waiting in the factory dinning hall for a result.
However, the management were still unwilling
to give a clear answer, and workers were unhappy.
Both sides entered a deadlocked,
and workers began to strike.
Police were sent to the factory to prevent
the situation from getting worse.
Shandong Villagers Appealing At Police Station Were Detained.
Radio Free Asia reported on villager Wang
Wenchun in Qingdao, Shandong Province.
Wang was appealing for his wife,
who was beaten while petitioning.
He was accused of traffic blocking
offences, and detained by authorities.
In the last three days, over 10 villagers have continuously
