Expenses for Beijing Olympics 10X Greater Than Tokyo's
After Tokyo's success in applying to host the 2020 Olympics,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media published
the $3.3 billion budget of Tokyo's Olympics, which is less than
one-tenth of the total cost of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The news triggered wide criticism toward the CCP authorities.
According to website of The People's Daily,
Japan plans to hold the 2020 Summer Olympics
between July 24 and August 8, with a budget of $3.3 billion.
Major media have reported on the chart showing that Beijing
spent over $40 billion for the Olympics.
It was the most costly of all Olympics, and is equivalent to
ten times the budget of the Tokyo Olympics.
The news trigged criticism from Chinese netizens.
One netizen commented on Sina microblog that
extreme lack of self-confidence leads to extreme showing off.
His views resonated with other netizens.
Gao Yu, Senior Chinese media professional:
"I think the Tokyo Olympics indeed deals the CCP a blow,
exposing its waste of people's blood and sweat
in order to brush up its own image.
The CCP wanted to show off its superiority
to hold a large project without going through budget approval
from the People's Congress or citizens.
There has been no other Olympics as extravagant and wasteful
as the Beijing Olympics."
According to data from the 2008 Olympic Studies Center,
the expenditures for the Beijing Olympics was estimated
at $42 billion (290 billion yuan), equivalent to 43%
of all Olympic Games spending since
the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.
Despite this shocking cost, it is said that the actual spending
for the Beijing Olympics is much more than that.
Gong Shengli, Beijing National Conditions Inside Reference
chief researcher: "The CCP uses the Olympics
as a rare opportunity for investment.
All expenses related to the party, government, military,
are listed in name of the Olympic Games."
Gong Shengli says the Beijing Olympics is the most expensive
one in the over 100 years of Olympics Games history.
Gong Shengli: "Its direct investment was over $50 billion.
The cost of 'stability maintenance' and border control
in surrounding provinces was estimated to be $100 billion.
The CCP did not dare to publish the audit on the real expense."
Although the Beijing Olympic Games happened five year ago,
Chinese people have been very displeased about
the CCP's massive overspending.
Mr. Zhang, Beijing citizens and engineer:
"People generally think it was too wasteful.
The CCP loves to show off, so it was extremely extravagant.
It use the whole country's resources.
Too wasteful. Just look at how long they shot off fireworks!
The London Olympics was different from it.
Many Chinese people think it was wasteful."
Some netizens questioned the authorities on
whether the huge spending went through public approval.
Gong Shengli: "China is under a one-party regime,
and the CCP always comes first.
The CCP's spending has never been published.
It asks the people, taxpayers, if they agree with its spending.
The CCP got what it wanted, but people did not benefit from it."
Netizens wrote on Weibo that people's demands weren't high.
They'd have settled for a badminton hall, or a free gym.
The authorities took money from the people to spend
on the Olympic Games, but people were not benefited.
The Bird Nest, the Olympic Park and other facilities have been
all but abandoned, and the people are not allowed to use them.
