“The Interview” Draws Great Interest From Chinese Audiences
Despite threat from the North Korea government, the Sony film "The Interview" was released on Christmas Day as scheduled. The dramatic story around the film has served as its best advertisement. Not only American audiences, but also Chinese audiences said they want to watch the film to experience how the head of dictatorship is depicted in a black comedy film.
The comedy film "The Interview" was eventually released by Sony Pictures Entertainment, whether North Korea is happy about it or not.
The film first became available online on Wednesday (Dec. 24) at 10 a.m. PST. Customers could pay to watch the film through either the official website or platforms such as Youtube, Xbox Video or Google Play. The cost is $5.99 to rent or $14.99 to own.
The film will not be screened by major theater chains in America. However, about 200 independent theaters, including Alamo Drafthouse in Texas and Cinema Village in Manhattan began to play the film since Christmas Day.
Lee Peterson, manager of Cinema Village, "Obviously we would like to make money off of the movie as we would with any movie, but it's important to take a stand about freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to see movies. I think it's mainly what it's about."
Now anyone is able to watch this comedy film which North Korea made threats about. The film induced tensions between the United States and North Korea. But it also has accidentally received the glare of publicity, due to it's "advertisement" by even the president. The dramatic story has also drawn great interest from Chinese audiences.
Mr. Zhang, Xinjiang Netizen: "Of course I want to watch it. It is received huge publicity now. Everyone wants to see what the film looks like and what kind of story it tells, such as Kim Jong-un threatening a hacking attack and even Obama got involved. We are very curious."
The comedy tells a story of two journalists, who is hired by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The North Korean government condemned the film. But in America, it is a normal thing to play jokes with political leaders in art work. In contrast, dictatorships such as North Korea always defy their state leaders. Therefore the film's black humor style and assassination story are a great challenge to North Korea's nerve.
On the other hand, maybe those black comedy elements are exactly what Chinese audiences would like to see.
Mr. Zhang: "Chinese civilians feel disgusted with Kim Jong-un and his regime. We mostly agree that the Kim dynasty is the origin of North Korean people's suffering. Therefore we are happy to see any story about eliminating Kim Jong-un and giving North Korean people better living conditions and freedom."
Besides the black comedy incident, Kim Jong-un should feel even more embarrassed as the world has recently been criticizing human rights issues in North Korea more. Following the Human Rights Council and General Assembly, UN Security Council debates the human right situation in North Korea for the first time. Once approved, Kim Jong-un will face trial from International Criminal Court once he leaves his state.
All this has irritated Pyongyang, which performed hacking attacks against Sony's Network. North Korea even threatened that it would strike U.S. on all "battlefields", including cyber war. It also threatened to attack the White House, the Pentagon and the homeland of America.
As usual, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) refused to discuss North Korean issues in the Security Council. It also refused to assist the U.S. in stopping North Korea's hacking attacks. The CCP's clearly shows the opposite attitude of Chinese civilians. Many thus question, "does all threatening come from Pyongyang alone?"
Wu Fan, political commentator: "North Korea is an undeveloped and closed place. Its sole route for the Internet is through mainland China. People hence question, 'how can North Korea know about hacking techniques if not instructed by the CCP's cyber troops?' This is why other countries wonder whether the CCP uses North Korea as a hatchet to attack the United States; and North Korea is supported by the CCP in technique."
As almost all telecommunication activities in North Korea have to go through the CCP-run network, was the hacking attack against Sony really from North Korea? Did North Korea's Internet crashes result from the U.S. counterattack? Although the CCP should know enough to answer these questions, it has yet to make any comment to date.
