Conflict between Baidu and Qihoo: 360 Accessing Users Private Information

Conflicts between “Qihoo 360”, a web browser and anti-virus
service, and “Baidu”, a web search service have been fierce.
A few days ago, news broke that many internet security
exchange companies ask to uninstall Qihoo 360.
This caused heated discussion on the internet.

Recently, a Baidu engineer also disclosed
that “Qihoo 360” collects users private information.
This opens the possibility for users' bank
account details to be accessed.
This revelation has ignited another round
of conflict between Qihoo and Baidu.
Some internet experts think that a certain amount
of competition between internet browser services is good.
However, competition should be in an appropriate way.

In fact, both Baidu and Qihoo cater to the needs
of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
They play an inglorious role, as both companies
block “sensitive words,” which are defined by the CCP.

Zhao Minghua, Manager of Baidu's
Internet User Information Department, disclosed that
“Qihoo 360 secure internet explorer” collects
internet users' private information.

Zhao Minghua stated that “360 internet explorer”
can bring about a lot of devastating problems.
Users' private information will be exposed, and bank
accounts will be stolen, and thus users' property infringed.

Google did not yield to Chinese Communist Party's (CCP)
Censorship, and decided to remove it's business from China.
Baidu has taken up to 80% of the market
share for China's internet search services.
With 500 million users, Baidu's second quarter
commercial income has exceeded 100 Million Dollars.
“Qihoo 360” is another internet search service
in China, and started to compete against Baidu for it's substantial economic interests.
The conflict between Qihoo 360 and Baidu
has caused widespread public attention.
In the past two weeks, Baidu's Depositary
Receipts in America have dropped 15%. Those of Qihoo 360 have risen 18%.

However, Qihoo 360 is as powerful as Baidu. Some
search results on Qihoo 360 even point to Baidu links.
Baidu has blocked Qihoo by stopping
it from visiting Baidu information.

Xie Wen, former General Manger of Yahoo in China,

said that competition to monopolize the internet search
engine industry is very severe in China.
It's a good thing that other search engine
companies can participate in the competition.

Xie Wen: “It's all right for other companies
to participate in the market.
However, the competition should be based on technological
innovation, users' feedback and quality of the service.
The competing companies shouldn't think
of taking short-cuts using inappropriate means.”

Wang Junxiu, founder of the first internet consulting
firm in China, stated that Baidu's neutral position has been questioned,
because Baidu mixes internet search results
with commercial promotions.

Wang Junxiu: “The way that internet search results
and commercials are mixed together is widely criticized.
Google separates those two aspects,
with search results listed in order,
and commercials are listed on the right side
of the webpage based on another system. In this way, it promotes competition.”

Although the conflict between Baidu and Qihoo 360
is very fierce, they both block sensitive words. They cater to the needs of the CCP.
When searching sensitive words like “June 4 Tiananmen
Square massacre” or “Falun Gong”, both search engines
show that “according to relevant laws and regulations,
some search results are not shown in this engine.”

Google has refused to block the words deemed sensitive
by the CCP, maintaining its domain in Hong Kong.
This is so that people from mainland China can still use it.

However, usually searching results cannot
be found or the webpage is blocked.
