School Attacks in China and US Reveal Different Attitudes
The same morning, when 20 students and 6 adults were
killed in the elementary school shooting in Connecticut, US,
22 pupils were injured in Guangshan County,
Henan province, China.
Right after the shooting, President Obama gave a speech
and ordered all the national flags to be at half mast to mourn the dead.
In comparison, the provincial officials of Henan were busy
with private affairs or playing computer games, while trying to block the news of the school attack.
Some even claimed that
“there is no point of discussing the incident.”
China Central Television (CCTV) and other major media
in China had heavily reported on Connecticut's shooting.
Yet, they haven't said anything about the injured students
in Henan, 50 hours after the incident.
As the school shooting in Connecticut shocked the US,
the Los Angeles police quickly responded,
by requiring an increase in campus patrols
around the city's schools.
President Obama also shed tears several times
during the TV press conference.
He ordered the national flags of US governmental agencies
including the White House, to be at a half-mast for five days, and promised to prevent anything similar in the future.
On the other hand, 22 Chinese pupils were injured
in Guangshan County, Xinyang, Henan.
Yet, the official local government website, gsweb.com.cn
suddenly removed the news.
They unilaterally announced that the press conference
scheduled for 15th is canceled - a sign of blocking the news.
A journalist revealed that all local officials
are avoiding being interviewed.
Village officials stated,
“we are away on private matters.”
The officials of education bureau were found
to “play games” in their office.
The reporter asked if the suspect had mental disorder,
and local party leader said, “no point of discussing this.”
Beijing lawyer Tong Zhaoping revealed on his microblog,
a netizen was detained by the police on his way to visit the injured students in Guangshan People's Hospital.
This netizen requested the officials to explain, asking,
“Are you treating students and civilians as enemies?”
The Vice President of Peking University Pen Society, He Zhe
remarked that in the one-party dictatorship the regime will never really care about civilians' lives.
He Zhe (Vice President of Peking University Pen Society):
”In China there have been many similar incidents, such as beating children to death, poisoning or knife stabbing.
I think those things occur less in US than in China, since
when the US media report the event, the elected officials have to respond or make statements on the issue.
On the other hand, there is no democratic system in China;
thus officials don't have to respond to the media reports.”
In contrast to the Henan school attack silence, most major
Chinese media reported heavily on the Connecticut shooting.
The CCTV even made it a headline of its evening news,
which is very unusual for international news.
However, all those media ignored the injured students
in Henan, without an exception.
Chinese economist Han Zhiguo remarked on his microblog,
we can only get the information on the incident from microblogs' sites,
while all the major media are pretending
they don't know about it.
Do major media show such a different attitude because
they despise the lives of Chinese children, Han asks.
Independent commentator Li Shanjian remarked,
the Chinese look down on human lives.
This is a result of the Chinese Communist Party' (CCP)
destruction of Chinese traditional culture and moral values.
Li Shanjian (independent commentator):
”There is a long story leading to this.
After the CCP took power, most mainlanders
experienced political struggles between people.
So many died and people became numb
regarding other people' death.
A more radical reason behind this is the CCP' atheism.
They believe there's no difference between the life of
human and animal, so they don't take human life seriously.”
Some netizens also speculate that there might be inside
stories behind the Chinese media's ignorance of Guangshan school attack.
Investigation shows that the incident on December 14th
is China's third, causing injury or death of school students in less than two years.
Some media thus questioned that there are significant
problems with campus safety management.
In addition, most of these students are left behind by their
parents who have to work away from their hometowns.
According to a report, school staff said there was
one security guard when the culprit rushed in.
However, when the attack started the culprit easily went
through the floors without any obstruction.
Till now, there are no news indicating there was
dereliction by any specific person.
Some student revealed, there was no guard or teacher
watching at the entrance in normal school hours.
Li Shanjian remarked that the Chinese need to elevate
their morality and recover the tradition moral system to embrace a good future.
Otherwise, the Chinese will always suffer from the ‘culture’
of despising human lives, created by the CCP's dictatorship.
