Several Hundred Reported Dead In North-East China Floods

Recent torrential rain has hit three Provinces
in North-East China, and Guangdong Province.
It has caused devastating floods, trapping many residents.
Some areas have no drinking water, power supplies or food.
The people there are complaining that the
authorities have not provided enough help.
Chinese official media have not reported
timely updated news, and people feel helpless.
Some netizens have revealed that the
floods killed several hundred people.
However, authorities are censoring news, claiming
that only several tens of people have been killed.

Southern China was hit by a strong typhoon
called Utor, causing devastating floods.
In Guangdong Province, heavy rain has caused severe
flooding, triggering landslides and landslides in many areas.
Sources said that more than 4 million citizens
in 18 cities in Guangdong are affected by floods.
The direct economic impact is estimated
to be 4.9 billion Yuan (US$800 million).

Staff member, Shantour Three Prevention Headquarter
in Guangdong: “The water is receding very slowly.
Water levels in some areas reached waist-height.

Upstream reservoirs are constantly flowing
over their spillways, as they need to ensure
upstream regions remain at safe levels.
Thus the upstream discharged water has
caused downstream waters to recede slowly.”

The torrential rain in Chaonan District, Shantou
in Guangdong caused the river banks to collapse.
Seawaters also poured inland, where many
houses were flooded, and citizens trapped.
Some villages have been surrounded
by water for more than 50 hours.
However, the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP)
media didn't report timely news of the severe situation.
The trapped people were left to rescue each
other, and citizens feel they are being ignored.

Resident, Simapu Township, Guangdong:
“Here, at least six villages were covered by floods.
Local officials dare not report this to the higher-level
government, as they worried about losing their position.
Why didn't we see journalists
come. We have seen nobody.
I know that the government always said, ‘if there is
any problem, come to see them’. It is only an empty talk.
When we face real difficulties, they
run away faster than anyone of us.”

The majority of the flood hit citizens lack water and
food, and were waiting for the arrival of supplies.
However, the government supplies didn't arrive.

A person from Hunan province told NTD that
her children went to the neighbor's house,
but couldn't come back due to the floods.

Hunan resident: “The neighbor's house has
been flooded, and my kids stayed over there.
In that house there are 7 children and 5 adults.
They have no food, nor is the water drinkable.
I called a rescue phone number, but no one wants to
go there. Even when I explained, no one tried to help.”

Some people questioned where
their nation is? Where is the rescue?

Lao Xu, an independent commentator in Mainland
China commented on the Weibo microblog.
Xu said that many people questioned why
the media didn't actively report on the floods,
such as when they reported on the earthquake?

Netizens replied that the earthquake
was a heavenly disaster, so they can help.
But flooding is manmade, especially the burst banks,
so the regime will be criticized if it is reported.

In North-East China, the traditional climate is
described as “nine years drought out of ten”.
However, it is now facing rare floods.

On August 16, heavy rain also hit Qingyuan
County of Fushun City, Liangning Province.
It caused devastating floods and landslides. The situation
in Qingkouqian township in Qingyuan County is severe.

Netizen “Zhu Xiaochen” asked for help on a Weibo microblog,
saying that the reservoir has burst in Nankouqian township.
600 citizens were killed, and the death toll is
increasing. Several villages have been swept away.
Many residents climbed onto their roofs,
only to be swept away seconds later.
There has been no rescue, and no
supplies. Media reports were blocked.

Mr. Chen, Hongtoushan township:
“Hongtoushan township is made of raised buildings.
The first floors are covered by flood, but nothing else.

Near the Hongtoushan township is Nankouqian
township. I heard several hundred people were killed there.”

Ms Xiao, resident from Nankouqian Township:
“About 500 people died here in Nankouqian.
We can smell the stink now, and it is
hopeless. We can't stay any longer.
We walked out. We have crossed over a several rivers.
It happened all of a sudden. There was no warning at all.”

People continuing to send updated news via the internet.

Netizen “@MaShixuan” said: “The latest news is
that dead bodies in Nankouqian are directly buried
if no one collects them. What a mess place, smelly.
Houses and villages all disappeared. The
building's first floors were covered by water.
Some dead corpses still hang in the trees.”

Netizen “@Pingshuxiaojuan” said: “The whole
Nankouqian will be blockaded this evening.
Until now, rescue efforts have only
covered 20% of the disaster areas.
Several hundred dead bodies have already
been found. Why do they blockade the area?
What does the government intend to do?”

Although citizens reported several hundred
people have died in three provinces in North
East China, these scenes are censored.
The CCP state controlled media reported that the death
toll is only 54, which is very different from local reports.
