Hong Kong Tycoon Zeng Wei Arrested in US: Is He Son of Zeng Qinghong?

Reportedly, Chinese tycoon Zeng Wei intended to
use a false identity to enter the USA territory of Saipan.
He was arrested by US Homeland Security officers.

The fugitive property tycoon from Mainland China had a
wealth worth Trillions, and had broken the law in Hong Kong.
Zeng is wanted by the Independent Commission Against
Corruption (ICAC) in Hong Kong, where he fled to escape.
The story has drawn wide attention,
and media coverage in China.
However, state-controlled media have
deliberately not mentioned Zeng's background.
Some netizens posted: "Do you know whom his father is?"

On January 28, Saipan Tribune cited
an officer of the US Federal Agency.
Zeng had been detained, after attempting to enter Saipan
using a false Chinese passport, with the name "Liu Zhiqian".
Under detention Zeng denied that he had previously
traveled to the US with immigrant or non-immigrant visas.
US Homeland Security agents found that
his fingerprint revealed his true identity.
Zeng Wei is wanted by Interpol.

The ICAC announced on January 28 that property tycoon
Zeng Wei was arrested in Saipan on the previous day.
Hong Kong will request that the US return Zeng.
Aged 51, Zeng was a key shareholder of the Yuhui Group.
He was alleged to have given bribes to bank staff for
loans and money laundering, so was wanted by ICAC.

Zeng faced four charges in Hong Kong on
October 7, 2010 over allegedly paying bribes.
In November 2010, Zeng applied to return
to Mainland China from Hong Kong.
This was reportedly due to the family
issues and to attend board meetings.
The judge approved his application for bail of HK$800,000.

In July 2011, Zeng didn't turn up to
his Hong Kong hearing, and escaped.
Interpol issued an arrest warrant
for Zeng on October 21, 2011.

Hua Po, Beijing current affairs commentator, says
that 90% of the rich class in China are associated
with privileged groups and the CCP system.

They rely on this special background to achieve their goals.

Hua Po: "Zeng Wei's name is very special, because
people instantly relate him with Zeng Qinghong,
Zeng Qinghong is a former Politburo Standing
Committee member, so it is not surprising."

Hua Po says that in China, the elite
have several identities and passports.
Being a rich businessman, it is not strange
that Zeng Wei holds a false passport.

Hua Po: "The Public Security Bureau has
previously found over 700,000 false identities.
What are the real identities of those 700,000 people?
I think there is no need for civilians to hold several identities.
Only those who want to go in-and-out of the country
need multiple identities, in order to grab more interests."

Caijing.com reported that Zeng Wei's
background aroused much speculation.
Inside his company, people talked about
his high-profile family background.
Zeng once disclosed his background on his personal blog.

He says he was born in an old house at Shiye Street
in the Qingyang District of Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
His father was a small clerk.

Voice of America reported that Zeng Wei has
been repeatedly exposed by overseas media.
Many reports said that he was the son of Zeng Qinghong.

He spent AUD$32.4 million to
purchase a luxury home in Australia.
Caixin Online reported that he had
published an article in Hong Kong media.
This was to clarify that he was not related to any
former Central Politburo Standing Committee member.

Zhang Jian, US-based China affairs expert: "His purpose
is nothing more than to suggest to the public that what
he has done is not linked with the central Chinese regime.
By using state-own media to deny it, people
can actually become more certain of his identity."

Hua Po: "He just wanted to clear
out his relations with Zeng Qinghong.
Many people have the same names in China, however.
So whether this Zeng Wei is that Zeng Wei,
and because there are crucial interests,
he needed to clear this for Zeng Qinghong."

Caixin Online says that Zeng Wei is a Sichuan native,

He graduated from Chongqing Southwest University
in 1983, and joined the Development Ministry.
One year later, he was transferred
to Sichuan Province party committee.
In 1988, he went to Hainan Province, and served in the
Hainan provincial regime and provincial People's bank.
He served as an assistant to the
governor of China Merchants Bank.
In 1996, he started a business in the property
sector, and founded Palm Springs Holdings Co. Ltd.
He was the chairman and president of the company.
