Where are they on New Year's Eve?
A traditional Chinese New Year's Eve should be a day that
the whole family get together, but there's a group of people
who are in prison or can't go home or are in exile in the
world on this day due to the CCP's persecution.
Every new year's eve, they uphold the truth,
fight for democracy, freedom and human rights,
but they can't enjoy being with their families.
Instead, they can only silently bless each other
in their thoughts.
A large number of prisoners of conscience and political
prisoners have been detained in the tens of thousands
of prisons in mainland China for years, including
human rights lawyers, dissident writers and scholars,
pro-democracy activists, anti-corruption activists,
religious people, and Falun Gong practitioners etc.
They have sacrificed tremendously for China's democracy,
freedom, and human rights.
Their families worry and miss them during the holidays.
Zhang Baocheng, one of the four people who requested
the CCP officials to open their property in Xidan of Beijing,
was arrested by the authorities last year.
Zhang Baocheng's wife Liu Juefan:
I couldn't see him on Mid-Autumn Day.
I couldn't see him on Oct. 1 (National Day).
It's New Year now, I'm not expecting to see him.
Why is he in prison for doing good deeds?
I know that what he did was right.
The only thing I can do is to take good care
of his father and daughter.
I support him. I think what he did was right.
No matter how much grievance we suffer,
I think it worth it.
I only hope that there won't be so many
prisoners of conscience this year.
I hope our society become good and humane.
Although these prisoners of conscience and
political prisoners have suffered so much hardship,
their sacrifice have gained the people's respect
and love in return.
The autocratic government that's persecuting them
has been spurned by tens of thousands of people.
Zhang Jian, a pro-democracy leader living in the US:
"I want to wish a happy new year to all the prisoners of
conscience, political prisoners, and religious people.
I hope you uphold your ideals and keep on fighting.
I believe that one day, such an autocratic and corrupt regime
will be definitely overturned by democracy and freedom.
Everyone who pursues democracy and freedom in China
is the backbone of the Chinese its future and hope for China.
In the new year, I wish that all your wishes come true,
and all your dreams come true."
There are also hundreds of thousands of Chinese
persecuted by the CCP in exile in the world,
seeking political asylum.
They can't see their families either.
But fortunately they can live in a free world.
Zhang Jian: "We Chinese in exile overseas are all
very ill at ease every new year. We all know that the Chinese
have the traditional thought of going home.
We hope more and more that the Chinese can live good lives.
When I see Chinese people enjoying the freedom and
democracy overseas, I hope our country can be like the
people in those other countries someday,
truly gaining our rights of living - natural rights."
Among many of the groups persecuted by the CCP,
Falun Gong practitioners are a special group.
They are neither a religious group, nor a political
dissident group, but because they uphold the spiritual faith
of Truthfullness, Compassion and Tolerance, they have been
put in prison, tortured, had their organs taken whilst still
living, and have experienced the most ruthless
persecution in human history.
What they lost is not only their freedom but also their lives.
Some Falun Gong practitioners escaped overseas under
the CCP's pursuit, and couldn't even let their families know.
Quan Xi (anonym), Falun Gong practitioners in exile from
China's Hebei Province: I feel very sad.
Especially when I think of my elderly parents.
I came out of the country without telling them.
It's even more painful for them to guess what happened to me.
It's a miserable feeling that you have a home that
you can't go.
It feels helpless and miserable under the persecution.
Everything seems ruined. It feels like we have parted forever.
It's a persecution that has ruined tens of
millions of families.
Those family members of Falun Gong practitioners
are also victims in this persecution.
Some of them are white-haired seniors,
and some are just new born babies.
A 2 year-old daughter of a female Falun Gong practitioner in exile
in Thailand, said this on New Year's eve: Mom, miss mom!
