June 4 Massacre Victims Tell Their Stories

Twenty five years ago, the military suppression of the students
and civilians in Beijing's Tiananmen Square took place on
June 4, known as the June 4 Massacre.

For 25 years, the Chinese Communist Party has been denying
its crimes.
NTD interviewed some of the victims.
Let's follow them and their stories during that period of history.

Reporter:
On April 15, 1989, the death of former CCP General Secretary
Hu Yaobang triggered the movement for anti-corruption,
democracy and freedom of speech among the Chinese students.

Having lasted for more than a month, the movement ended
when CCP tanks went into the Tiananmen Square on the
evening of June 3.

Thousands of innocent students and civilians died of the
brutal crackdown.

The CCP, however, has denied the tanks and killing and
claimed no one died of the suppression.

Jin Zhao was the student liaison during the Tiananmen student
movement. In the afternoon of June 3, he organized the students to return
to the Tiananmen Square when the CCP had mobilized and
gathered the troops.

Jin Zhao, the student liaison in 1989 democracy movement:
"At around 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, the troops came out
of the Great Hall.

I saw them crawling out.
They pointed their guns at us.
They surrounded us like a cloak of darkness.
Tanks rushed towards the Square from the north.
There were many tents in the Square. People were still sleeping.
The tanks ran over the tents and crushed the tents.
The troops were following behind the tanks.
The tents in the north side were all smashed."

Jin Zhao had gone through several hunger strikes during the
movement and been sent to the hospital five times.
He said according to his estimate, there were more than
100 students from his college gathering in the Square and
around 4,000 around the monument.

After the tanks rolled over the students, the negotiations took
place and the army agreed to allow the students to evacuate from
the east side of the Square.

Fang Zheng was then a student at Beijing Sports University.
He was also in Tiananmen Square.

Fang Zheng, student movement participant: "At around
6 o'clock of June 4, we were evacuated from the Square.
After going through the Square, the tanks turned around and
rushed over towards the students who were on their way back
to the campus.

I was one of the victims. The tank ran over my legs.
Many students from Beijing Universities were killed by the tanks.
Some were even crushed into paste."

Then 19-year-old Wang Nan was a junior year high school
student of Beijing.
Not knowing that he might never return home, he left for the
Square without saying goodbye to his family.
In order to record the historical moment, he carried his camera
but never went home again.

Zhang Xianling, mother of Wang Nan: "He was killed at the
south corner of Nam Cheong Street.
The bullet went through his left forehead and made a hole in
his helmet.
He was still alive at that time.

Some students from the medical school had provided first aid
and demanded to take him out to the hospital.
But, the martial law troops did not allow the request.

There were two ambulances in the north corner of Nam
Cheong Street.
But they weren't allowed to conduct rescue.
They were all buried in the Square.
After the wounded were all dead,
they buried them in front of the Square gate."

For 25 years, the CCP has maintained its denial of the bloody
facts.
Even 25 years later, prior to June 4, the CCP conducts massive
arrests and monitoring of the dissidents concerned about the
June 4 Massacre and news blocking on the Internet.

Amnesty International called on the Chinese authorities:
The authorities must cease this campaign of severe persecution.
Publicly acknowledge the human rights violations which
occurred in the Tiananmen crackdown of 1989;
Launch an open and independent inquiry and hold those
responsible for human rights violations accountable;
Provide compensation to victims of the 1989 crackdown and
their families.

Fang Zheng says that he no longer holds any illusion about
the CCP vindicating the June 4 Massacre.
He only hopes that people will get to publicly speak out about
of June 4 Massacre.
That will be the hope of receiving fair judgment of the June 4
student movement.
