Mainland First Internet Blockade Case Held In Court

On September 4, a post-80s civil legal worker brought a case
to sue mainland telecommunication company China Unicom
for blocking overseas websites including Google at Shenzhen
Futian Court. The first case of its kind is sensational.

It,s the first Internet blockade case in mainland China, which
has been successfully filed and held in a court.

According to Radio Free Asia report, the accuser Wang Long
said the trial only lasted an hour and a half.

There was no sentence passed in court.

It went smoothly although there was some illegal process
from the judges during the trial.

Wang Long said he does not have any hope on the outcome.

However, he can,t give up the opportunity to fight for the
right even he knows he will lose.

However, Wang Long said he received a phone call from
national security just before hearing the case.

He said he might be summoned because of the case.

Mainland Media People Arrested On Suspicion Of News
Extortion

On September 3, at mainland financial media company 21st
Century Network, six reporters and two managers were taken
away by Shanghai police on suspicion of using the news
for extortion.

According to mainland media report, the case involves many
companies from Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangdong.

Many police across the cities collaboratively
arrested people.

The arrested editor, deputy editor and related managers are
making profit by extorting enterprises using positive and
and negative coverage for their own ends.

This is another high-profile arrest of media people by
the Chinese authorities after Guangzhou Xinkuiaibao,s
reporter Chen Yongzhou, Liu Hu and prominent
Chinese free media journalist Gao Yu,s arrests.

It is considered to be another crackdown on media by the
Chinese authorities causing concern with overseas media.

Many Western medias including AP, Reuters, the New York
Times, Bloomberg, South China Morning Post, the Wall
Street Journal, BBC and Voice of America published reports.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always used false
accusations to suppress the media.

The true reason for the purge on the 21st Century Network
is still being speculated about.

Hong Kong University Students Issued Strike Declaration

On September 4, the Hong Kong University Students Union
issued a strike declaration calling all students to protest against
the Hong Kong political reform proposal passed by the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) People's Congresses.

The strike declaration, entitled “Follow the righteousness and
the rule to save Hong Kong" criticized 1200 people in the
nomination committee with no change on four sectors as old
wine in new bottle.

This is an insult to the Hong Kong peoples, intelligence.”

The declaration made three requests: first, not yielding an
inch on citizen nomination;

Secondly, to urge the legislative council to deny the election
proposal as inconsistent with international standards;

Thirdly, the Legislative Council will commit to fully direct
elections from 2016.

The declaration also requests real support to the students
from the institutional professors and lecturers.

For example, they can,t punish students because
of the strike;

They can participate in civic lectures; they can volunteer to
help students study or even as teachers, striking in solidarity.

According to Hong Kong media report, the president of the
University of Hong, Kong Peter Mathieson is supportive.

He believes that students are free to choose it.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Joseph Jao-Yiu Sung
has an open mind on the students, strike.
