Lunar New Year Is Coming,
Migrant Workers Are Asking For Pay

As the Lunar New Year is approaching, the migrant workers
are struggling to be paid throughout the nation, there are
at least dozens of incidents of workers and migrant workers
asking for pay happening in China.
Recently, it even triggered several bloody incidents.

Commentators analyse that, this phenomenon highlights the
helplessness and frustration of the underlying population,
as well as the cold-blooded and unscrupulous collusion
that wantonly bullies the vulnerable groups.

According to incomplete statistics, at least dozens to
hundreds of mass incidents about rights protection occurr
throughout China every day.

From Feb. 3-5, there were around two hundreds rights
protection incidents occurring daily, and the incidents of
asking for pay accounted for more than half.

On the morning of Feb. 5, the trial of Suzhou resident
Fan Mugen's relocation case started.
Seventy to eighty migrant workers from "Yuan Xing Packing
Factory" who failed to get paid were pulling banners and
defending their rights in front of Suzhou Intermediate
People's Court, and were all being arrested.

Human right activist who was at the scene, Yin Xu'an:
When they were unrolling the banner, a large group of
special police rushed forward and took their banners away.

Then they began to arrest people, the leader was being take
to a small car, the rest of the people were taken to a bus.

On the same morning, dozens of migrant workers were
requiring the government to assist them to get paid
in front of Shuangliu County government, Sichuan.

Landless peasant in Shuangliu County, Zhou Yanqiong: I heard
that they went there yesterday and today, two days in a row.
One farmer said that those migrant workers involved in
millions of wages, and they were asking for the government
to step in, the government did not, and there were police
violently driving them away.

Three hundred workers from Zhangxin garment factory
in Dachang County, Langfang, Heibei Province went to the
county government to ask for assistance in their wage claim
since Jan. 16, but the government locked the door.

Worker of Zhangxin garment factory, Chen Xin:
Yesterday (Feb. 4) we went to the county government again,
but it did not open the door for the whole day.

It locked its doors from morning to night, not allowing
workers to enter and meet us.

On Feb. 3, thousands of construction workers of Xiangyun
Real Estate in Shijiazhuang went to Heibei provincial
government to ask for their unpaid wages owed by the
developer, large numbers of police were guarding.

On Feb. 2, more than two hundred migrant workers whose
wages were owed for more than one year in Yunnan Province
went to the government for assistance, and were beaten by a
large number of police, at least six of them were injured.

In addition, bloody incidents that triggered by migrant
workers' wages claim are occurring throughout the nation.
On Feb. 3, coal miners in Yan'an, Shanxi, used explosives to
kill a labour contractor in his own car with the
suspected motive of fruitless wages claims.

On Jan. 31, a 38-year-old labour contractor Li Hangui was
killed by contractor's men on his way to a construction site.

At the end of last year, Zhou Xiuyun, a migrant worker from
Henan, was brutally killed by police when she was asking for
pay at the construction site in Taiyuan, Shanxi.

The online video has shown that a fat policeman was tightly
stepping on the hair of Zhou Xiuyun who was lying
on the ground.

On Jan. 19, a 13-year-old girl from the 16th floor was unable
to get her father's wages.

Huang Qi, the founder of 64tianwang analysed that, the
frequent blood incidents of migrant workers' wages claim
highlighted the underlying population's
helplessness and frustration.
It also shows the cold-blooded and unscrupulous collusion
that wantonly bullied the vulnerable groups.

Huang Qi: In mainland China, the protection of vulnerable
groups is inadequate.
Businesses and enterprises are usually colluding with the
government, and they are very powerful in the local area.
Farmers have inadequate protection for their own interests,
and China's trade unions are doing a bad job, therefore,
there is no one to fully protect their interests.

Huang Qi stated that, migrant workers usually go to ask the
government to protect their interests when their wage claims
failed, and then encounter all kinds of prevarication.

Full of desperation, they use road blocking, jumping off a
building, self-immolation and protests to defend their rights.
However, the government would consider these as
disturbances, and dispatch police to suppress.
This vicious cycle caused the explosive growth of incidents
of wage claims in mainland China every year.
