CCP Clamps Down on Freedom of Speech
In the third week of October, the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) issued orders to even more strictly control the Internet.
And now, it decided to tackle the problem of fake news
in the news publishing industry.
This last control measure is broader than the previous one,
which now includes the whole news publishing industry.
Some media workers believe that this so-called
“strike fake news” measure shows that the CCP wants to further restrict news freedom.
The CCP’s “Combating Pornography and Illegal Publications”
office and the General Administration of Press and
Publication office were ordered to tackle the many illegal newspapers
and periodicals in China from November 10 to December 31.
The CCP says it wants to target illegal newspaper and periodicals,
illegal-publishing agencies, fake correspondents, and fake news.
Yang Yinbo, a community singer for Chongqing News Net:
“I think news itself isn’t complicated. It should be real and be quick.
Real news should restore the truth, that is, approaching,
following and digging out the truth.
Then, no matter which media uses this news,
it’s real news, which addresses the fundamental issue.”
Liu Yiming, former correspondent and columnist for
China Private Magazine, said today it’s hard to say
what is real news and what is fake news because
there’s no media freedom in China.
He said a normal citizen could be a reporter and
they don’t need the government to tell them they can or can not report the news.
Columnist Liu Yiming: “You can’t say he is not a reporter
if he doesn’t have an official reporter ID card.
Actually, even CCP mmouthpiece reporters only have a
reporter ID issued by the media,
but don’t have an official ID issued by the General
Administration of Press and Publication.
According to the newly announced standard,
even these CCP reporters could be considered fake reporters.
In fact, the official fake CCP reporters are much faker than
the so-called fake reporters.
The government will never punish those officials
fake CCP reporters, but they won’t hesitate to punish ordinary citizen reporters.”
Independent media thought these “fake strike” actions
were CCP tricks.
It uses some social phenomenon as an excuse,
to tighten control of media and the internet.
The latest annual freedom of press assessment report
by human rights organization,
"Freedom House" pointed out, the CCP strengthened the
control of traditional media and internet.
In the 2011 freedom of press list, China ranks 184,
which places it in the bottom 13 of 196 countries.
The General Administration of Press and Publication also
required that news agencies build a system to find and
correct fake and inaccurate news, perfect accountability and
prevent the generation of false news.
Columnist Liu Yiming:”It’s ridiculous.
The official fake news are much more than private fake news.
Most of the time, the CCP encourages media to
produce fake news.
If the fake news is good for the government,
the CCP encourages media to do it.
Like Xinhua News Agency, there is too much fake news
produced by Xinhua News Agency.
It makes fake news every day. But it is the official mouthpiece,
so nobody can do anything against them.”
Netizens are questioning the monopoly of “News Broadcast”
being real news in Center People's Broadcasting Station.
Liu Yiming said the CCP use fake news to fool people,
and maintain the image of the government and officials.
He thought the only way to have real news in China, is to
grant the media independence, and give the citizen the
authority to vote for officials, and stop suppressing the
reporters who report conscientious news.
“Finance” is a well-known investigation magazine.
Recently, its veteran investigative reporter Yang Haipeng was fired just because of political pressure.
Yang’s wife Mei Xiaoyang was injustly sentenced to
4 years in jail.
Yang then unveiled the abuse of public power in
Shanghai via blogs in the past year,
which include a variety of capricious behavior by officials.
Finally, Yang was forced to resign.
