Bizarre Stories Exclusive to China

The U.S. financial website, Business Insider, reported
that currently, the rapid economic growth rate has created unique problems for China.
For example, a poor environmental record;
the collapse of high-rise buildings and bridges;
publicity for maintaining the Chinese regime's image;
increased divorce rates based on avoiding taxes; and cases of dead pigs floating in rivers.
The report summed up 29 bizarre events,
which could only happen in China.

On March 13, the Business Insider reported some strange
incidences happening inside China,
including: local officials spending thousands of dollars on
gold and silver moon cakes,
and hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to buy emeralds.

Beijing authorities have even banned luxury goods
in a bid to combat this "gift buying".

Some Chinese couples even divorce in order to avoid taxes—
when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) imposed a 20%
income tax on the selling of a couple's second house,
divorces increased among couples owning multiple houses.

The report also mentioned that China's polluted red rivers
and smog could be seen by satellites in space;
and in 2008, milk in China even contained melamine.

[Weiping, Mainland Netizen]: "What country on earth
shows the living standards of citizens decline while the GDP is in rapid growth?—only China.
It is said that China is very well known for ranking first,
such as: 'the most corrupt country'; 'the most polluted';
and 'the most polarized country'—all these problems
stem from corruption.”

Other examples include the collapse of a 13-story building
and of Fujian Province's newly completed Wuyishan Bridge.
The Qingdao Bridge—the world's longest bridge spanning
26 miles with eight lanes—cost 14.8 billion yuan to build and has very little traffic.

[Xing Tianxing, Political Commentator]:
"It all boils down to us pointing our finger at the CCP—
its departments, regulatory systems, environmental protection,
quality control and safety standards are just terrible.
Thus, shoddy constructions and security issues
have surfaced repeatedly.”

The report says that recently, more than 6,000 dead pigs
were floating in the Huangpu River.
Officials claim that the pigs tested positive
for the porcine circo-virus, which they say only affects pigs
not humans, apparently making the water safe to drink.

[Xing Tianxing]: "Think about it, does this government
really have any credibility?
So many dead pigs, where did they come from?
—it should be investigated and found out quickly.
Up to now, the government fails to offer a public explanation,
so this is a failed government.”

Netizen Weiping believes that
the CCP just wants to fool its citizens.

[Weiping]: "If the CCP really wants to do things, it will be done
with one sentence, but when it's all talk, it's only deceptive.
I don't believe one word regarding the judicial reform,
difficulties, and even of taking years to ban delicacies;
it's a joke, a lie, and it wants to deceive ordinary citizens!”

Political commentator Xing Tianxing points out
that these things will not happen in a democratic country.

[Xing Tianxing]: "Under a democratic mechanism,
officials have to work to resolve problems and if they can't do so on time they have to leave.
The CCP is a system that facilitates the existence of corrupt
officials, so if there's a problem, the government will not
take care of it—ordinary citizens must bear the consequences.”

[Weiping]: “China's system is linked with all our problems;
if the system remains unchanged, it will be very hard to make progress.
China is actually equal to past feudal societies—
it's under a one-party rule.
Now, the National People's Congress is in session
and the representatives are not chosen by the people,
but assigned by the CCP beforehand.”

The report disclosed other bizarre scenarios, including:

the Wenzhou high-speed rail crash in 2011, which killed 40
and injured 200; the rich hiring substitutes to stand trial;
China's jammed highways during the Golden Week holidays,

which resembled big parking lots where some people
were actually doing push-ups to pass the time.
