Korean War has 60th Anniversary, but Who Won It?
July 27th marks the 60th anniversary of
the Korean War Cease-fire Agreement.
On that day, the United States, South and North Korea
all held events commemorating the end of the conflict.
Back in 1953, the two Koreas didn't sign a peace treaty.
Instead the cease-fire agreement created the Korean
Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between them.
Although the war resulted in a deadlock in the end, the
U.S., South and North Korea all claimed to be victorious.
How can there be multiple winners in a single war?
Historians recall historical facts to see who is
the real winner of the Korean war.
In 1950, the Korean War was initiated by North Korea,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime and
the Soviet Union as they attempted to communize
the entire Korean peninsula.
For the South Korean army and United Nations forces,
they had successfully protected freedom and peace
in the war against the communist states.
After the war South Korea saw a rapid rise
in economic development,
while North Korea turned out to be one of
the poorest countries in the world.
On July 27th, about 5,000 Korean War veterans attended
a commemoratory event at the Korean War Veterans
Memorial in Washington D.C.
President Obama laid a wreath at the Memorial and
acclaimed the veterans for their achievements in the war.
Obama is the first US president in nearly 60 years
to attend an event commemorating of the Korean War.
At the event Obama said South Korea was
the victor of the war.
U.S. President Obama: "We can say with confidence
that war was no tie. Korea was a victory.
When 50 million South Koreans live in freedom –
a vibrant democracy,
one of the world's most dynamic economies,
in stark contrast to the repression and poverty
of the North—that's a victory; that's your legacy."
The CCP and North Korea armies had suffered
great loss in the Korean War,
with hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed.
However, the two countries always celebrated
July 27th as a 'Day of Victory'.
This year, accompanied by the CCP's vice president
Li Yuanchao, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held
a military parade in Pyongyang as a 'celebration
of victory in the Korean War'.
Chinese historian Liu Yinquan:"It's obviously a
crushing defeat (for the CCP and North Korea).
So many soldiers were killed, and they failed
to accomplish any of their political goals.
Originally their attempt was to join the Korean
Peninsula under a communist regime,
but in the end they had to retreat back to
their starting line, north of the 38th parallel."
Cheng Ganyuan, a Chinese jurist, had personal
experience of the Korean War.
In his book, 'My Experience of the Korean War',
Cheng defines the war as being initiated by Kim Il-sung,
manipulated by Stalin, and executed by the CCP
against the justice forces of the United Nations,
at the price of the flesh and blood of young Chinese soldiers.
According the CCP's military record,
of the 980,000 Chinese soldiers lost in the Korean War,
over 950,000 were dead or wounded.
South Korean president Park Geun-hye made
an address in commemorating the 60th anniversary of Korean War Cease-fire Agreement.
South Korea also held a Korean War history exhibition
and anti-North Korea assemblies on the day.
Kim Kwan-jin, South Korean Minister of Defense:
"North Korea claims July 27th as it's 'Victory Day' and
always spends much effort fabricating propaganda about it.
However, the war was a total failure for them as they failed
to achieve the goal of communizing the Korean Peninsula."
In his commemorating address, Obama also stressed that
the U.S. will maintain its position as the most
powerful military force in the world,
continue to protect the safety of its allies
and its unmatched power.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in commemoration,
"more than 28,000 American soldiers, sailors, airmen and
Marines still serve in Korea today”, and he says
they are “ready to help guard freedom as well as
promote peace and prosperity on the
Korean Peninsula and throughout East Asia".
Li Yuanhua, former Chinese historian living in Australia:
"When North Korea invaded South Korea 60 years ago,
the United Nations dispatched justice forces to stop
the spread of the evil communist regime.
So today Obama and the United States are also confident
and capable of stop any North Korean threat to free societies
and people of the whole world."
After the Korean War ended in 1953, both Communist
North Korea and China sunk into social and economic misery.
With ceaseless political movements, the communist regime
killed numerous innocent people and further caused nationwide famine.
In addition, there have been conflicts between the CCP
and North Korea for a long time, and the poor diplomatic relation between them continues.
In particular, North Korea had persisted
in performing nuclear tests.
Under the pressure from global media, the CCP
authorities publicly announced 'disapproval' over this.
This year the CCP's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
has for the first time used the term 'Korean War',
instead of "the war to resist U.S. aggression
and aid Korea".
This is believed to mark a falling out
between the two communist regimes.
