Professor Chen Hongguo Resigns from University
Following the resignation incidents of Professor Xia Yeliang
at Peking University and Professor Zhang Xuezhong
at East China University of Politics and Law,
Assistant Professor Chen Hongguo at Northwest University
of Politics and Law (NUPL) also openly resigned.
Chen says that his resignation is due to his fear of losing
the bottom line and principle of dignity that he heavily valued.
Scholars say Chen made the decision because he lost all hope
in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) system.
On the morning of Dec. 23, Chen Hongguo posted
a notice of resignation on his personal blog.
He said that he attended an academic meeting
in Hong Kong in December.
However on his way to the meeting, university managers
met with him to discourage him from attending.
Upon his return from Hong Kong, he was openly criticized
at the university.
Meanwhile the university cancelled his pass
to Hong Kong and Macau.
In addition, the university refused to provide the necessary
documents for him to apply for a private passport.
The university leaders repeatedly told Chen,
"Don't think too much when looking at the long term plan."
Chen Hongguo: "The direct reason
is because I can't get my passport.
The university doesn't help, but they didn't clearly forbid.
There is no ban order.
There were many attendees, they didn't have obstacles,
only I did.
Thus they wanted to embarrass me."
Chen says in his statement: "The main reason I have resigned
is because I cannot face my students."
He said, "If basic rights aren 't maintained, how can I stand
on stage teaching law students about faith or the law
as a professor of law?"
"My road is getting narrower, the room for educational
research and academic sharing are getting smaller."
Chen: "Actually I really want to stay,
because I love my students.
I love being a teacher.
But I indeed cannot carry on.
The pressures are both visible and invisible,
direct and indirect.
Of course they have accumulated over time.
Maybe there is a political reason, but I should maintain
the bottom line of education and maintain the bottom line
of a legal professor's dignity."
Chen Hongguo earned his Master's degree at NUPL,
then he carried on his studies at Peking University.
In 2006, he earned a doctorate in law.
Later he served as a professor at NUPL.
He is currently an assistant professor and master tutor.
In 2012, Chen openly stated he will not participate
in the assessment for the title of professor.
Netizens respectfully dubbed him
the "Tenured Assistant Professor".
During Chen's tenure, he often invited scholars
and lawyers to join the university's forum.
In November 2012, Chen initiated a "reading salon"
event at school.
Four reading sessions were planned, including a reading
of "On Liberty" by John Stuart Mill
and "Democracy and Its Critics" by Robert A. Dahl.
However, only two were carried out before
the university intervened, putting a halt to the sessions.
Regarding Chen's resignation, his friend Li Heping,
a legal scholar in Beijing, says that
Chen has made such a decision because he lost hope
in the CCP's system.
Li Heping: "Professor Chen Hongguo is a scholar,
his life is in the classroom.
If he resigns from the job, it is very difficult to find one again,
and he pays the price.
He bravely chose this way, a manifestation of the fact that
he couldn't bear it any longer, he feels desperate.
There is no hope, thus he has to do this way."
Li Heping questioned what is left at China's podium now that
scholars such as Chen Hongguo, Xia Yeliang and Zhang
Xuezhong, in upholding their conscience and speaking
the truth, have resigned.
What the students can learn is only propaganda
controlled by ideology.
Zhang Zanning, Professor of Law at Southeast University:
"Having independent thoughts and views is not allowed.
It is only allowed to follow the propaganda of party culture
to educate students.
Being a human, one cannot only have
a single thought and a single concept.
One should have freedom of thought and expression.
In the educational industry, the CCP brainwashes students,
they ruined students. It is a very sad issue."
Professor Zhang Zanning believes that under
the CCP's educational system,
the appearance of real talent and masters of their craft
is impossible.
