If you have knee, back or hip pain, you may be happy to know that your treatment options have expanded. A new kind of therapy called AposTherapy is now available in New York, and it doesn't require taking medicine or surgery to help you get your stride back.
Barbra Akresh, AposTherapy Patient:"I had difficulty going up and down the steps, with sharp pains in the knee and pains in the hip (while) walking."
It's helped over 50,000 patients in Israel, UK and Singapore, but it's only recently come to America. AposTherapy is a high-tech bio-mechanical shoe system that treats knee osteoarthritis and other leg and back pains.
Barbra Akresh, AposTherapy Patient:"After the first time I used them, I was able to sleep without pain in my knee almost immediately."
Barbra suffered from pain in the right knee and right hip, as well as some back pain. She began her AposTherapy treatment in December and this is her third follow up.
Barbra Akresh, AposTherapy Patient:"The knee pain is primarily gone, walking outdoors is pain free I'm able to walk farther, I can go up and down the steps now without pain."
AposTherapy is effective for Osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscal tear, ligament tear, low back pain. It can also be used for rehabilitation before and after knee and hip replacement surgery.
Invented by Dr. Avi Elbaz and Dr. Amit Mor,M.D AposTherapy treats pain by changing the way that patients walk. The pain relief comes from the two convex pods on the bottom of each shoe. These pods are adjusted to change the foot's point of contact with the ground and shift the pressure from the inflamed area to another.
Dr. Amit Mor, MD Chief Medical Officer at AposTherapy:"If I have load in the inner side of the knee, I can shift the pods to the outer side a bit. Immediately, when the patients walk, it feels that the pain in the knee is alleviated."
The shoes also reeducates the muscles around the joint to be more stable. The curvature of the pods introduces stimulates and retrains a patient's nervous system. The pod convexity level for each patient is different based on their age, overall condition, and neuromuscular control.
Yaakov Gottlieb, Physical Therapist at AposTherapy:"Most of the patients that come in here are in significant pain. Once we are able to calibrate the device for them, we are able to significantly decrease their pain, by doing that, it enables us to train their muscles so that way they can in the long run, they can keep the changes that we're creating for the Apos Therapy device."
The technology behind the shoes sounds complicated, but it's really simple to use for patients. Once patients are equipped with the special AposTherapy shoes, they just need to wear them going about their daily routine for up to an hour each day.
The process begins with visiting the AposTherapy Practice for an initial assessment. Patients are given comprehensive surveys about their pain, joint function, and quality of life. Then they will be examined at the computerized gait analysis lab, which checks for walking patterns, including load distribution on each leg, stride length, gait symmetry, etc. Based on the results, a specially trained therapist will give each patient their individually adjusted device.
Following the initial assessment, patients will come in for 3-5 follow up consultations to ensure positive progress. A typical treatment program continues for an average of 6-12 months.
Yaakov Gottlieb, Physical Therapist at AposTherapy:"One of the things that impresses me about Apostherapy and inspires me is that we're able to change the trajectory of the arthritis and really help these people in ways I've never seen before."
An independent survey conducted in the UK indicated that 86 percent of AposTherapy patients reported alleviation ins pain. New studies show that knee osteoarthritis patients who used AposTherapy maintained pain relief two years after treatment.
AposTherapy is currently not covered by health insurance. It costs more than 5000 dollars for one year of treatment. The New York office is located at 330 Madison Ave, 6th Floor.
