The True Story of Propaganda Film Red Crag

Red Crag was a 1961 Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
propaganda film.
The film is about a nanny who always used pistols in each
hand to fight the enemy.
The original character was based on Chen Lianshi, who
was expelled from the party after the CCP took over China.
Chen's daughter and in-law's family who followed Chen to
join the CCP's revolution, were then brutally persecuted.
Recently, Chen's grand daughter Lin Xue revealed
her family's story at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
She exposed the true story of the CCP revolution.

Red Crag had three female CCP members, Deng Huizhong,
Liu Longhua and Chen Lianshi together who fabricated
the movie.

The movie was about a heroic nanny equipped with pistols in
each hand.
She was very skillful, so that enemies were even
afraid to hear her name.

The character of the nanny was based on Chen Lianshi.
Chen was born in an academic family in late Qing Dynasty.
Her ancestor is a famous scholar of Hanlin academy.
When Chen was 27, she was influenced by her husband, who
was a CCP member, then she joined the CCP revolution.

Chen joined the CCP in 1928, and her husband even died for
the party.
She devoted herself to the party, even having been
jailed eight times.
She had still been dismissed by the party during the "three-anti
campaign" for the allegation of "unstable stance".

Recently Chen's granddaughter revealed the true story of the
CCP's revolution at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Lin Xue, a retired media-staff, now focuses on writing
folk history spoke to the media.
There were eight people in her family who were CCP members
in Sichuan.
They included her grandmother Chen Lianshi and her father
Lin Xiangbei. Three of them died in Kuomintang era.
Five of them joined the Chinese civil war and survived the war.
Later they were all purged by various CCP political movements.

Sources suggest that in 1949, there were 18,000 "underground
CCP members" in Sichuan.
Until the Cultural Revolution in 1968, 80% of them were
classified as rightists and anti the party elements.
They became lower status civilians.
Several hundred remained in the party.
70% to 80% of those who were sent to forced labor camps
were persecuted to death, starved to death, or died of illness.
In May 1949, the central party issued a 16-word order to
deal with "underground CCP members".
It was translated as "demoting them, controlling them,
locally dealing with them, gradually expelling them".

Lin Xue said in the seminar that after her father Lin Xiangbei
was classified as rightist, he still foolishly showed his loyalty
to the CCP.

In the labor camp, her father cried in bed
about his mistreatment.
He gradually awakened after the Cultural Revolution started.

His final awakening came when he first heard of the 16-word
decree.
He realized that the party which he treated as a mother, was so
insidious, utilitarian and ruthless. He was cheated by the CCP.

Hong Kong's Open magazine reported that what Lin Xue
describes is very different from Red Crag, which fabricated
the great and noble.

Lin Xue's family revolutionary history
shows the truth of CCP ruthlessness.
Then the youth who completely devoted themselves
to the revolution, were used first by the revolution,
later were thrown out and betrayed after the victory.

Song Zheng, co-writer of Red Crag Youth:
"I was classified as rightist in 1959.
I struggled everyday, and was forced to report my problems.
The criticism sessions were too much, I wasn't
allowed to sleep at midnight.
It was repeated on the next day and on the third day."

Song Zheng, 91, was a co-writer of Red Crag Youth,
She was persecuted.
Another writer He Yanling told NTD about the reason
that they wrote this history.

He Yanling: "After the CCP announced China's establishment,
it launched many political movements.
They were treated as criminal but not people of merit.
It is certainly unfair.
We must record their true stories, to give others a chance to
know this period of history, to stop the tragedy happening again."

He Yanling says that after the CCP ruled China, people who
devoted themselves to the revolution were treated very badly.

He Yanling: "We mainly introduce those we are familiar with.
We think it is necessary to record their experiences.
To record their struggle at the time, to record various suffering
that they encountered after 1949."

In 1944, He Yanling joined the preparation work
for the China Student Herald newspaper.
Being a media person, he experienced and witnessed that
Chinese people have been through many catastrophes.
