Report on Metro Crash Sparked Public Fury

On the next day of Shanghai Metro Crash,
CCTV reported that it was “a slight rear-end collision,”
which sparked public furies and satires.

The word “slight” quickly became popular online.

After a series of railway accidents took place,
the civilians request the government to identify
the parties responsible for the accidents.

Comments point out that Shanghai Metro Crash and
Shanghai Teacher Apartment Fire in 2010

have exerted negative effects on the future career of
Yu Zhengsheng, Shanghai Communist Party (CCP) Secretary.

On September 27, Shanghai Metro Line 10 incurred
a signal system failure and had to switch to manual control.

A rear-end collision took place while the trains were guided
manually, with 284 people injured and hospitalized.

According to the “Realtime Microblog” reports, at that time,
passagers inside the carriage collapsed like domino falling.

Many people』s faces were soaked with blood.
Some suffered from fracture or sprain.

Shanghai Metro issued on its official microblog
a “deep apology”, saying it was “the darkest day
since the operation of Shanghai subway.”

However, the posting was deleted shortly afterwards,
prompting discussion and anger among netizens.

The Wall Street Journal quoted Chinese lawyers』 microblogs
by sayings, “The current (socialist) system disallows
normal human feelings.”

“The original statement was deleted,
because it didn』t follow the propaganda style (of the CCP).”

A video published on Tudou.com shows that
Shanghai police blocked the civilians from going to rescue
the injured passagers.

The reason was that their identities needed to be verified
before they can enter the accident site.

This practice incurred a wide condemnation from netizens.
The video was “harmonized” (deleted) after 10 pm.

In the evening of the accident day, CCTV』s primetime news
did not even report the Shanghai subway accident.

Netizens denounced CCTV for disregarding human lives
and public safety.

On the next day, CCTV』s morning news reported
"a slight rear-end collision of trains on Metro Line 10."

Li Guangdou, a CCTV consultant, said in his microblog,
“The birth of a new term: Slight Rear-End Collision.”

Many netizens forwarded this posting and made sentences
accordingly: slightly stuffed, slight brain dysfunction,
slightly crazy, and so on.

Actress Yao Chen forwarded the posting by saying,
“I』m slightly forwarding."

Real estate tycoon, Pan Shiyi, laughed at himself and saying,
"I have suffered a slight mental handicap."

Actor Feng Yuanzheng made a sentence saying,
"The weather today is slightly poor!
I am also in a slightly depressed mood!"

A netizen posted online, "Metro』s slight rear-end collision,
corrupt officials』 slight embezzlement,

citizens』 slight tax burden, housing price』s slight appreciation,
inflation』s slight rising, medical care』s slight difficulty to access,

city inspectors』 slight beating, city authorities』 slight demolition,
slight dads』 competition for an administrative position,

judges』 slight briberies, statistics』 slight twist,
news reports』 slight fraud, power』s slight collusion with money,

slightly lavish spending of public funds,
slightly rampant swill-cooked dirty oil to trade as cooking oil,,
morality』s slight decline, and I slightly sighed helplessly.”

Sina.com microblog launched a poll on the topic
"CCTV said Shanghai Metro was a slight rear-end collision,
so what are you slight with?”

45% of the choices were "I am slightly desperate."

Guangdong XKB Daily』s front page headline on Sept. 28:
"No thunder, no landmine, but occurred Shanghai metro
rear-end collision," ridiculed the accident.

A Southern Metropolis Daily editorial criticizes that
this is not the first accident on Shanghai Metro Line 10.
The article questioned the project bidding.

Huang Liangtian (former Editor-in-Chief, Civilian magazine):
"Even the project bidding has become a black box operation.
So, it』s full of corruptions.

As Wen Jiabao said, no moral blood but officialdom』s blood
is flowing. There is a total disregard of the civilians."

Hong Kong based Apple Daily points out that
Wenzhou train crash nightmare has not been totally over.

The State Council inspection team has not yet confirmed
the causes and the responsible parties,
Shanghai Metro again incurred new rear-end accident.

High-speed rail and subway are dominated by
the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Construction.

So, to go after the culprit, how could we let go of
the Shanghai Municipal Government and
the Ministry of Construction?

Shanghai CCP Secretary, Yu Zhengsheng, was also
the former Minister of Construction.

Analysts believe that it is the most critical time now for
the intense power struggle before CCP』s 18th Congress.

The Shanghai Metro accident has seriously affected Yu』s
future career, and has also shaken the Shanghai officialdom.

Zhu Jianguo (Shenzhen-based independent scholar):
"Shanghai Metro real-end accident was caused by
a kind of systematic corruption or political corruption.

With an intense power struggle for the 18th Congress,
Yu Zhengsheng』s opponents may use this as an excuse
to attack him, which is definitely detrimental to him.”

Shanghai Teachers』 Apartment fire in November 2010
caused 53 deaths.
Yu declared an introspection into the issue of corruption.

However, soon after, problems related to the donations and
compensations for the fire victims surfaced one after another.

Not until September 19, Shanghai Municipal Government』s
Press Office was compelled under the public pressure
to announce the donations and expenditures.

Nearly half of the donations still have not yet released to victims.
The official total donation amount is twice to three times
less than the victims』 statistics.

Hong Kong-based Ming Pao points out that
it is said that natural and man-made disasters
can affect the future career of an official,

but the contrary examples are commonplace
within the CCP』s officialdom.

If Yu Zhengsheng really fails for the CCP』s18th Congress,
the reason is not likely the apartment fire or Metro accident.
