Chinese Media Expect Dignity in 2014

It is the beginning of a new year.

One year ago the Southern Weekly's New Year's message
caused unrest in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
This year, Southern Weekly had to turn in its New Year's
message for editing a week before publication.
Thus, its content was weak and helpless.

Southern Metropolis Daily and Beijing News
are also waiting helplessly.
Southern Metropolis Daily expressed dreams of child
trafficking abolishment.
Beijing News wished for dignity for all mankind
in its editorial.

On the first day of 2014, the Southern Metropolis Daily
published a New Year's editorial advocating the rule of law
and achievement of effective power constraints.

The Beijing News published an article entitled, "We dream
of dignity", saying that the inherent strength of the Mainland
Chinese society means everyone wants to enjoy a life with
freedom and dignity.

The "Southern Weekly" New Year's editorial said, "As a true
newspaper, we are sometimes strong, sometimes weak, and
we have no other choice but work more diligently, more
professionally and responsibly to seek and express the truth."

This year's "Southern Weekly" New Year's message included
a photo of people posing contemplatively in a dark urban
setting with a little daylight glowing in the background.

Some netizens say this represents that the Southern Weekly
is waiting in the smog.

The editorial entitled, "We are the Southern Weekly, we are
Independent" said that over the past three decades, they had
ups and downs, and setbacks, "but never such a need for
a rebirth from ashes."

The BBC reported that the tone of the Southern Weekly's
editorial was weak and helpless.
The Southern Weekly's 2013 editorial was replaced with
“rather abstruse philosophical language” the BBC said,
for last year it challenged the CCP's control and monitoring
of the media.
The BBC points out that this year's media editorials neither
mentioned the regime nor the confrontation in early 2013.

Hu Jia, Beijing human rights activist: "Editorial monitoring
and censorship is an iron rule of the CCP.
I believe that the Central Propaganda Department has kept
an eye on the Southern Weekly this year.
After all, it is a very popular newspaper among intellectuals."

Chinese cultural critic Ye Kuangzheng said that currently,
the large-scale arrests of corrupt officials is a very popular
initiative, but the tightening control of the media
is getting worse.
Ye Kuangzheng: "I think there are no fundamental changes
in China's systems, especially in the control of public opinion.
In reality, it is getting worse, such as the Southern Weekly's
New Year editorial.”

Netizens express different views about the Southern Weekly's
2014 New Year message.
One says that compared with last year's message, this year's
editorial seems "sad and pathetic."
Another said that because Chinese cannot speak the truth,
they want a strong guy at "Southern Weekly" to lead the way.
Hoewever, Chinese forget that even a strong man
has his weak moments;
"We forget that we rely on a newspaper to do a job we
should be doing ourselves", the netizen commented.

According to Hong Kong's Ming Pao, the 2014 New Year's
message from the Southern Weekly had to be handed in
a week in advance for editing.

Looking back to early 2013, the Southern Weekly originally
planned to publish an editorial calling for the protection
of civil rights.

After it was replaced by a message praising the CCP instead,
strong criticism was stirred up from netizens.
Guo Feixiong, human rights activist, who made a speech
outside the Southern Newspaper Group compound in 2013
was recently accused of allegedly disturbing public order.

He is being detained in Guangzhou Tianhe District
and awaiting prosecution by authorities.

In addition, entrepreneurs Liu Yuandong and Sun Desheng
were both present and held placards.
They are both detained on the same charge –
disturbing public order.
Many other participants were taken away
or threatened by police.
That is the retaliation from authorities toward people
who dared to show support last year.
