Upgrade, Exit, Stay Put, What's Next For Occupy Central?
Another violent clash involving the Hong Kong umbrella revolution between the police and people in Mong Kok resulted in a hundred arrested. Some opinion believes the two month Occupy Central campaign should end now, but others believes there should be stronger action. How will Occupy Central go? Let's see the report.
The Hong Kong Police even fired tear gas in its site-clearing on Nov. 25. It was said there were 6,000 police involved in the site-clearing with 116 people being arrested. On the morning of the 26th, police arrested more than 20 people including Scholarism convener Huang Zhifeng, deputy secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) Cen AOhui. The Standing Committee Situ Zilang assisted bailiffs to execute the second court injunction.
Civic Passion founder Huang Yangda told the New York Times that the Occupy movement needs to be upgraded in order to occupy more areas or government buildings. Huang Yangda said there were 2 Civic Passion members arrested during the violent impact to the Legislative Council Building on November 19th.
It's said that the Civic Passion, internet cooperatives, as well as initiators for the free movement are already growing impatient for the moderate path supported by the majority demonstrators. They believe that only more intense action can force the Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to make concessions.
However, other scholars and commentators believe that the radical idea is unrealistic.
Hong Kong writer Zhang Chengjue: it is difficult to stay now. How can you upgrade? I believe we can stop it temporarily and adopt a more flexible approach to the occupy from time to time. The occupation is mainly to express that we will fight for genuine democratic elections. In fact, I believe that the Occupy Central's purpose has been achieved, namely to wake up the Hong Kong people inside and outside, especially the international concern.
Ching Cheong, the Hong Kong political commentator pointed out that the radical approach would be counter-productive.
Ching Cheong: I do not agree with the radicals because it will increase residents' dissatisfaction with the protests. In that case, why should we upgrade it? We have to accept this movement has made great achievements. It's time to consolidate the achievements rather than expand because it is impossible to achieve the intended target through the first movement. It might be more effective doing strategic shifts now.
The Alliance for True Democracy convener Joseph Cheng: I personally prefer to reduce the occupied area to a relatively small place in the Admiralty to avoid any inconvenience to Hong Kong. In that case, we are more likely to stick to it, and the Pan Democrats won't commit a non-cooperation movement in the Legislative Council.
According to the latest opinion poll from the Hong Kong University, Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying's popularity rebounded 4.3 points compared with the beginning of the month, the latest score is now 44.7 points. Public satisfaction rate on the government also rose to 31% and the dissatisfaction rate greatly reduced by 11 percentage points to 40%. There was 66% people supporting site-clear in the survey for the Occupation movement and only 26% people support to maintain the status quo.
And a survey of Technology and Science University showed that 73.2% respondents think that the occupation should exit because of the effect to the economy and people's livelihood.
Ching Cheong: It's time to end this occupation action now because nearly 80% people request site clearing. According to opinion polls by the University of Hong Kong, Mr Leung's popularity increase instead of falling if not to end the movement. People's anger at the inconvenience from occupation movement has been shifted to support Mr. Leung.
Next Media boss Jimmy Lai said in the Radio Free Asia interview on the 25th that, if you insist on non-retreat, the occupiers may eventually be defeated and lose the possibility of a comeback.
The masked men violently impacted the Legislative Council Building on the early morning of the 19th. Afterwards, one of the sponsors of the Occupy Central movement, Associate Professor of the University of Hong Kong, Chan Kin Man said the protesters should focus on how to get public support by evacuating the streets.
On the 22nd, more news reported that three people of Occupy Central Dai Yaoting, Chan Kin Man and CHu Yiu-Ming will surrender in early December.
Zhang Chengjue: They should do it because the civil disobedience needs to take legal responsibility. All in all, it should be a long-term stance based on the Beijing side because you can't achieve a significant effect in the short term. Especially for more than a billion mainland people, most do not understand this movement because of the misconception from unclear information. In this case, we need to pay more attention to strategy.
It is said that the Admiralty occupiers are currently undergoing a Saturday Campaign---signature campaign, hoping to emulate the East Germany's Monday campaign, which eventually led to fall of the Berlin Wall viaa continuous efforts.
Promoters Andrew told the media that they hope people go to the Central core region with yellow ribbon every Saturday to express determination for genuine democratic elections. Andrew believes that the continuous movement will bring increasing pressure unto the government.
