China’s Red Cross Wants to Earn Its Reputation Back

Lots of warmhearted people have made donations of
money and materials for the Ya’an earthquake victims.
However, few people have sent their donations
via the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC).
China’s non-official charity groups have explicitly
distanced themselves from the RCSC in respect of donations.
the RCSC Supervisory Board declared it will reopen the
investigation into “the Guo Meimei incident”.

After a 7-magnitude earthquake hit Ya’an,
the RCSC initiated a donation campaign.
The RCSC has obviously lost people’s trust for it’s
being rocked by corruption scandals.
By 7pm on April 20, the RCSC has only received
donations of 140,000 yuan.
On its official micro-blog were left hundreds of pages of
Comments saying: “Scram!”

On April 24, China’s media reported
an announcement by the RCSC Supervisory Board.
The organ intends to reopen an investigation into
the “Guo Meimei incident” in mid-to-end of May.

In 2011, Guo Meimei showed off her wealth
in her real-name micro-blog account,
under the title of “Commercial General Manager, the RCSC”.
Guo claimed that she
“lives in a big villa and owns a Maserati.”

(Hong Kong writer) Cheung Shing Kok: “The scandal of
Guo Meimei has been exposed to the public.
No matter how hard you try to earn back
the reputation of the RCSC, it will be futile.”

All of China’s non-official charities have all openly claimed
that they have no relation with the RCSC.
A notice was posted on the site of a donation campaign.
It reads, “We hereby declare that this event
has nothing to do with the Red Cross Society of China.
Please rest assured of this when you make your donations! "

(Critic) Lan Shu: “This issue has largely destroyed
Chinese civilians’ recognition of ‘Chinese characteristics’.
Over decades, the so-called ‘Chinese characteristics’
have always been ‘ Communist Party characteristics’.”

Public data show that the RCSC has been
under administration of the CCP Ministry of Health.
The RCSC has set up a CCP committee.

A commentary published in Deutsche Welle
Chinese website cited netizens in China.
It said, “the RCSC is actually an integral part of
the whole CCP system of rule.”

Martin Unternaehrer, official at the Regional Delegation
for East Asia, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) told the New York Times Chinese website that
the ICRC is independent of the Red Cross agencies
of all other member nations.
The ICRC has no right to require the RCSC to
make its financial accounts public.
Nor does it have rights to oversee
the operation of the RCSC.

Lan Shu: “Overseas, the Red Cross is deemed to save lives.
But in China, it is pre-fixed with ‘Chinese characteristics’.
That has turned it into a corrupt agency,
which exists to maintain the established image of the CCP. ”

In recent years, the CCP authorities’ violent
“stability preservation” and all-out corruption have totally lost the people’s trust.
The RCSC certainly cannot escape the public distrust
resulting from this

For the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake,
the RCSC received donations of over 4 billion yuan.
However, what ensued were continuous scandals of
corruption and embezzlements.
In 2011, the RCSC Shanghai Luwan branch was exposed
as having laid on a meal costing nearly 10,000 yuan.
Later, “the Guo Meimei incident” was unveiled.
And the scandals have discredited the RCSC.

Commentator Wang Beiji was among those in the rescue
efforts for the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake victims.
In the quake-hit areas, he witnessed jerry-built houses,
with steel reinforcements replaced with iron wire.
Many student victims were crushed by collapsing
school buildings of dangerously inferior quality.

Wang Beiji says that, facing such tragedies, the authorities
Have always shown scorn and have cracked down on warmhearted activists.
These facts have made the public realize that
the disaster was in fact man-made.
The exposure of “the Guo Meimei incident” has led
the public to distrust the RCSC.

Wang Beiji: “This signals an awakening of the Chinese people
to the ugly reality of the CCP’s corrupt authoritarian regime.
The Chinese should now realise that man-made disaster
has been the real source of all the ” natural catastrophes” .
The worst man-made disaster in China is exactly
the existence of the CCP itself.”

Wang Beiji points out that after so many earthquakes
and other disasters have occurred in China,
citizens have repeatedly witnessed and have
been shocked by the CCP’s crimes against humanity.
Wang Beiji says this will speed up
the disintegration of the Communist regime.
